A recent BBC investigation has uncovered two “disgraced” male nurses, who are holding “Botox parties” either in people’s homes or in beauty salons, injecting the prescription medication into several people at once at discount prices. Here at our Mayfair Aesthetic Clinic patients have been asking us what the big deal is, so we thought we’d write a blog post to summarise the story.
What does “disgraced” mean?
In this instance, the former nurses are described as disgraced because they were once registered nurses, who were ordered to stop practising by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMWC), due to concerns over their professional conduct.
This means that they are legally not allowed to prescribe medications and as Botox is a prescription-only medicine, by injecting it without a doctor present they are acting outside of the law.
Is that the only reason Botox parties are a problem?
Sadly, no. There are numerous issues with the idea of a “Botox party”. There are reasons that Botox is a prescription medication, one of which is that it requires considerable skill and anatomical knowledge from the injector in order for it to have the desired effect – freezing wrinkles – rather than some other, less desirable consequences.
Patients of one of the nurses uncovered by the BBC have claimed that they were left in severe pain after attending a Botox party, and have even questioned whether the substance they were injected with was Botox at all.
The location in which the injections are performed is also important. When something is being injected beneath the surface of the skin, it is vital that it is administered in a sterile, clinical environment, to avoid the risk of infection. At a Botox party, whether in someone’s home or in a salon, it is unlikely that the environment will be suited to the activity.
What is the safest way to have Botox?
Wrinkle-relaxing injections are best performed by a qualified and experienced medical professional, in a clinical environment. Price should not be the foremost consideration – of course, finances are a concern for everyone, but remember we are talking about a procedure that can have a profound effect upon your facial appearance, and you want that effect to be positive, so it pays to see a qualified doctor.
