A facial peel is a cosmetic chemical treatment that helps lessen the appearance of freckles, blemishes, age spots, light scarring and any number of other skin irregularities on the face. Also called chemical peels, facial peels can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and give new life to sun-damaged skin. Peels are available at various depths depending on your desired outcome, working underneath the skin to achieve amazing results. Your skin will feel smoother and softer after the first treatment and will gradually improve as new skin cells form. Facial peels improve skin texture for the softer and smoother complexion of younger, healthier looking skin.
The types of peels available at Dr Joney De Souza Aesthetic Clinic include:
Glycolic peels – these are mild formula peels which can be incorporated into a beauty routine for brighter-looking, smoother skin.
TCA Peels – these are deeper, stronger peels and a course can improve surface wrinkles and blemishes.
ZO Three Step Peel – this is a medium-depth peel. The skin will generally take seven to ten days to heal, so clients will need to take a week off work. Repeated applications are made to the desired depth. Peeling reaches the upper dermis. The procedure takes about 40 minutes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Chemical skin peels stimulate collagen synthesis and can help in the treatment of fine lines, sun damage, irregular texture, superficial wrinkles, to reduce acne and acne scarring. They are also effective in treating pigmentation problems (dark areas or areas of discoloration), age spots and to reduce pore size.
Gentle chemical skin peels are recommended for early signs of sun damage and ageing of the skin. Glycolic acid is a gentle peel that can progress to a medium-depth peel, according to concentration. It is recommended for sensitive, oily skins and those with rosacea. Lactic acid and salicylic acid are recommended for acne-prone skin.
Medium-depth chemical skin peels, such as TCA, penetrate deeper to reach the medium layers of the skin. They are recommended for deeper lines, acne scarring and some pigmented lesions. They are also effective for sun damage, open pores and poor texture. Medium skin peels are not suitable for darker more sensitive skin types or anybody prone to hyper-pigmentation.
Dr Joney De Souza will take your medical history and assess your suitability for a dermal filler treatment at your free consultation. Usually anyone is suitable if they have loss of volume in the face and want to replenish this and ‘plump up’ unwanted folds and wrinkles to reduce their appearance, resulting in a smoother, more youthful looking skin.
Dr Joney will run through the procedure with you and ask you to sign a consent form. He will repeat the aftercare instructions which will be printed for you to take home. A pre-determined concentration of tricholacetic acid peel mixture will be applied in layers to your face until the desired depth is achieved. Time is taken between applications to cool your face with the fan until any discomfort eases. When the procedure is complete, your face will be gently cleansed.
Depending on the type and depth of chemical facial peel decided upon during your consultation, you may have very little downtime or, in the case of TCA peels, you may notice some swelling the day following a standard peel. You will be advised to cleanse your face twice daily and apply a daily topical serum. This regime should be continued until peeling is complete. The onset and duration of peeling varies according to the depth of your peel. It is important that you do not aid peeling by picking, as this can result in areas of scarring. Peeling must be allowed to progress naturally, any peeling skin can be clipped with scissors but must not be pulled off.
Once peeling is complete you will be advised to gradually reintroduce your normal daily skin regime. It is common following a standard peel that the face is temporarily pinker than usual. Within a few weeks your usual skin tone will return and your skin will look its radiant best about six weeks following a standard TCA controlled-depth peel.
