Facial fillers are used to maintain volume in the face, and thus restore (or prolong) a youthful, rested, healthy appearance. Sometimes referred to as ‘soft tissue enhancement,’ or by some of their brand names such as Juvéderm®, Restylane® or Teosyal®, facial filler injections take only minutes to perform and the cosmetic results are immediate. The selected facial filler is injected at sites where natural fat has depleted, the most common being the folds next to the nose (nasolabial folds), the lines running from the mouth toward the chin (marionette lines), sunken cheeks and thinning lips. These facial fillers are biocompatible, versatile in their weights and densities and, although the can last, they are still temporary. Depending on the staying power of the product (as well as the reaction of the patient) touch-ups will eventually be required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Depending on an individual client’s needs, Dr Joney may choose a dermal filler to fill in a wrinkle or a hollow, or he may choose a filler that stimulates collagen production to provide more global volume replacement and rejuvenation. You can expect Dr Joney De Souza to work with you to achieve realistic expectations, improving fine lines or wrinkles, smoothing nose to mouth lines, increasing mid-face volume and enhancing cheeks or returning your lips to a younger look, enhancing them and creating a more defined lip border. Dermal fillers can also be used to lift the corners of the mouth, which tend to turn down as we age. There are so many uses for dermal fillers and a consultation with Dr Joney will help you decide which is the best one for you.Prevention is often better than cure.
Dr Joney De Souza will take your medical history and assess your suitability for a dermal filler treatment at your free consultation. Usually anyone is suitable if they have loss of volume in the face and want to replenish this and ‘plump up’ unwanted folds and wrinkles to reduce their appearance, resulting in a smoother, more youthful looking skin.
A local anaesthetic cream may be applied – although some dermal fillers, like Juvéderm, have an integrated anaesthetic. For treating wrinkles, the dermal filler will be injected quite superficially into each individual line, and then massaged to ensure that the product is evenly dispersed, so you don’t end up with any lumps. Cheek enhancement is usually performed using higher viscosity filler, which is injected deeper into the dermis to create a volumising effect. For tear trough (under eye) rejuvenation – which is a relatively new treatment to deal with dark circles and fill those ageing hollows under the eyes – multiple tiny quantities of the dermal filler are injected in the under-eye area.
There is minimal downtime after a dermal filler treatment, although there may be some redness at the site of injection, and – rarely – a small amount of bruising, so you might want to wait a day or two before having that big night out to show off your new look. Or invest in some mineral make-up which is ideal for covering up any tell-tale signs that you’ve had a procedure. Most of these fillers are temporary and will need to be topped up after six to twelve months to maintain the results.
