What am I doing to age my skin?

frecklesOne of the questions that comes up time and time again in skin consultations here at Dr Joney De Souza’s Mayfair cosmetic clinic is this: “what have I done to cause my skin to age so quickly?”

Now, this is a difficult question to answer and sometimes the answer isn’t clear-cut – sometimes premature ageing is a genetic problem. If your mother had wrinkles in her early thirties, then there’s a good chance that you will too, however well you look after your skin.

However, there are a few lifestyle factors that are major contributors to premature ageing. Here are three of the main culprits:

We know, we know, you’ve heard it all before – smoking is taking years off your life. But did you realise it’s also adding years on to your perceived age?

Smoking cigarettes reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood, which in turn increases the number of free radicals flying around causing damage to your skin cells. The result is dry, grey, prematurely wrinkled skin.

Again, we all know that drinking too much alcohol isn’t great for you. But it isn’t just your liver that suffers. According to a recent article in the New York Daily News, giving up alcohol could be the key to looking younger for longer. Alcohol dehydrates you, which affects your skin as well – in the long term, this lack of moisture can lead to wrinkles.

Not only that, but excessive drinking can cause redness and inflammation – consider the stereotype of the drunk with the swollen, red nose and flushed cheeks. Not exactly a youthful look, is it?

Sun bathing

Catching a few rays may feel good, and there’s no doubting that a golden glow can make you look younger and healthier in the short term, but the wise thing to do is to get your glow out of a bottle. UV rays cause untold damage to the skin – at worst, of course, skin cancer, but it’s highly ageing, too, causing pigmentation, wrinkles and worse.

If you’re guilty of one or more of these skincare sins, then the best thing you can do is to stop now, then book a consultation at Dr Joney De Souza Aesthetic Clinic in Mayfair to find out which of our many anti-ageing skin treatments is most suitable to get your skin back on track.
