PRP - PLATELET RICH PLASMA THERAPY - FOR HAIR LOSS FAQ
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) for hair loss is a treatment which utilises our bodies own unique ‘self heal’ mechanism. A small quantity of blood is taken from the patient and we separate out the growth factors and bioactive proteins in the blood (which initiate and speed up tissue repair and regeneration) and injecting this platelet rich plasma into the scalp to encourage hair growth. Also known as autologous platelet rich plasma. Evidence indicates that some patients may benefit from PRP for hair loss, particularly for androgenetic alopecia in men or women.
PRP is not a new treatment - platelet rich plasma injections have been around for decades, helping athletes to heal sports related injuries (they're particularly helpful at healing tendon damage) but increasingly the benefits of this treatment are being used in aesthetic medicine.
PRP treatment is carried out by Dr Joney De Souza at his clinic in London. During this treatment small amounts of your own blood will be taken and processed in a centrifuge which will separate the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma. The platelet rich plasma, which is a concentrated formula of your own platelets rich in growth factors, is then injected into the treatment area. These growth factors are needed to repair the body, but are also valuable tools to fight the signs of ageing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What can PRP for hair loss do for me?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for hair loss is a treatment utilising plasma prepared from the patient’s own blood. The platelet rich plasma contains growth factors and bioactive proteins (globulin, albumin, fibrinogen), nutrients, vitamins, hormones and electrolytes which speed up tissue repair and regeneration. The treatment increases hair density and reduces hair loss to normal levels. Improvements are seen within 90 days, with hair growth continuing to improve in some patients over 6 months. Results have been seen in patients with androgenetic alopecia and with alopecia areata and is suitable for men and women.
Who is suitable?
You will be invited for a medical consultation to assess your suitability for this treatment.
What’s the treatment like?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a by-product of blood (plasma) that is rich in platelets.
Dr Joney De Souza will take a small amount of your blood and place this in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma containing growth factors. The plasma is then re-injected into treatment area.
The process should be no more painful than any other injectable procedure, but the treatment area might be numbed beforehand with a topical local anaesthetic cream. Some practitioners combine this with other ‘self-heal’ treatments, like Medical Micro-Needling to enhance the results.
What happens afterwards?
Patients are advised not to wash their hair or scalp for 24 hours following treatment. Most people find the treatment isn’t painful, however if there is some discomfort paracetamol can help.
