Pico Laser treatment for Tattoo Removal
PicoSure laser tattoo removal is a breakthrough pico laser treatment technology that uses ultrashort (one-trillionth of a second), highly pressurised pulses to shatter the ink into dust-like particles that your body can absorb quickly and effectively.
Dr Joney De Souza Skin and Laser is one of the few clinics in London able to offer the PicoSure treatment which is the most advanced and the best permanent tattoo removal laser on the market. The PicoSure laser is able to target black, blue, red, green, and multi-coloured pigments, something which is not possible with an older laser tattoo removal machine.

The PicoSure laser from Cynosure is one of the most advanced lasers in the world for tattoo removal. PicoSure delivers extremely short (trillionths of a second) pulses of energy to break up tattoo pigment. The ultrashort pulses and wavelengths work together to shatter the tiny particles of ink in your tattoo while minimising the amount of heat delivered to your skin, which means that over several treatments the tattoo will fade as the ink breaks up and disperses. Your body will then naturally and safely remove these ink particles via its immune system.

Depending on your needs, the team will assess your tattoos and goals to develop a full treatment plan.
| Treatment | What it does | Downtime | How long results last | Key difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PicoSure Laser | Breaks down pigment and improves skin quality using ultra-short pulses | Minimal | Long-term with maintenance | Focuses on pigment and skin clarity, not resurfacing |
| Fraxel 1540 Laser | Stimulates collagen to improve texture and scarring | Short | Long-term with courses | Fractional resurfacing rather than pigment targeting |
| CO2 Laser | Removes damaged skin layers for deep resurfacing | Significant | Long-lasting | Ablative resurfacing with longer recovery |
| UltraClear Laser | Resurfaces skin using controlled cold fibre energy | Short to moderate | Long-term | Customisable resurfacing with reduced heat |
| IPL / Light Therapy | Targets redness and superficial pigment | None to minimal | Short-term | Less precise than PicoSure for pigment |

The number of sessions depends on the size of the tattoo, ink colours, depth of pigment and how your body responds to treatment. Most tattoos require 4–8 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart, although some may need more for full clearance.
PicoSure is particularly effective at removing black, blue, green and dark pigments. It also removes stubborn inks that other lasers struggle with. Certain colours like pale pinks, yellows and pastels may require more sessions, but PicoSure generally delivers faster, more complete clearance than traditional lasers.
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, hot flick on the skin. PicoSure is significantly more comfortable than older laser technologies. A cooling device or numbing cream can be used to make the treatment more comfortable if needed.
Downtime is minimal. You may experience redness, swelling or a slight frosting effect on the skin immediately after treatment. These reactions usually settle within a few hours to a couple of days. Scabbing or mild blistering can occasionally occur and is part of normal healing.
Most treatments take 5–20 minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the tattoo. Larger tattoos require longer sessions.
PicoSure uses ultra-short picosecond pulses to break tattoo ink into much smaller particles than traditional lasers. This allows the body to clear pigment more efficiently, often with fewer sessions and reduced heat damage to surrounding skin compared to older tattoo removal technologies.
When performed correctly, PicoSure tattoo removal has a low risk of scarring. The laser targets pigment rather than surrounding tissue, but proper technique and aftercare are essential. Dr Joney’s approach prioritises skin safety alongside effective ink removal.
